EMCOR, INC. has been recognized as one the “Michigan 50 Companies to Watch,” an awards program sponsored by the Edward Lowe Foundation.
EMCOR, INC. will be honored at an awards ceremony during the third annual Michigan Celebrates Small Business event, April 24 in Lansing.
“Michigan 50 Companies to Watch is a unique awards program designed to shine the spotlight on second-sate companies,” says Mark Lange, executive director of the Edward Lowe Foundations, a not-for-profit operating foundation based in Michigan. The foundation’s mission is to “champion the entrepreneurial spirit” by encouraging entrepreneurial cultures in communities throughout the country and helping second-stage companies learn from each other.
“When it comes to a robust economy, second-stage entrepreneurs play a critical role because they generate new jobs and sustainable growth,” Lange says. “And yet, they’re not often recognized or appreciated for the impact they have on the economy or the community.”
EMCOR, INC. is a leading manufacturer of linear motion products, manufacturing high precision parts used in the machines that produce parts for the automotive industry. They also produce parts for aeronautical, nuclear, steel mill and paper mill production. Distribution extends from Canada to South America with some Asian and European countries as well. Emcor’s main Product, precision re-circulating ball bearing type ball screws, range in size from hand held to 7 inches in diameter by 64 foot long; the largest every manufactured in the world.
Due to continued growth, Emcor will complete an addition in spring of 2008 and another planned for the autumn of 2008. The company was founded in 1982 and is owned by Pat O’Brien and his two sons, Garrett and Kyle.
Companies nominated or the “Michigan 50 Companies to Watch” list must be second-stage companies, defined as having 6 to 99 full-time-equivalent employees and generating $750,000 to $50 million in annual revenue or working capital from investors or grants. In addition, the companies must be privately held and headquartered in Michigan.

Michigan Sugar Company, the fourth largest beet sugar processor in the United States has completed the move of its headquarter operations to Monitor Township in Bay County, Michigan. The company has relocated 38 full time staff positions from its former leased office space in Saginaw County. The new offices are located within the company’s largest production facility at 2600 South Euclid Avenue.
Mark Flegenheimer, president and chief executive officer of Michigan Sugar, said the move to Monitor Township will allow for consolidation of all administrative staff into a central campus which will be more efficient. “We will continue to be strong supporters of all communities in mid-Michigan and throughout our growing region,” he said.
“It is great to see a quality firm like Michigan Sugar moving their headquarters to Monitor Township. The word is out that Bay County is a great place to do business,” Monitor Township Supervisor Gary Brandt commented.
Frederick Hollister, president and chief executive officer of Bay Future, Inc., the community’s economic development organization, stated, "Because the value-added agriculture industry is very important to our community, we are proud that Michigan Sugar Company chose to relocate its headquarters to Bay County’s Monitor Township.”
The facility on Euclid was previously owned by the Monitor Sugar Company before an October 2004 merger with Michigan Sugar. Michigan Sugar Company is the largest beet sugar processor east of the Mississippi and the fourth largest in the United States. The Company is a cooperative owned by approximately 1,300 sugar beet growers, employing 450 year round and 1,750 seasonal employees in the mid-Michigan region. It generates nearly $300 million in direct economic activity annually in the local communities in which it operates. Michigan Sugar Company became a cooperative in 2002 and the Monitor Sugar Beet Growers and Monitor’s Bay City factory joined the cooperative on October 1, 2004.

Bay City, Michigan Bay Future, Inc. Chairman Dominic Monastiere announced today the
appointment of Frederick W. Hollister as the organization’s President & CEO. Mr. Hollister was
selected by Bay Future’s Board of Directors from a field of over 25 candidates.
Mr. Hollister is presently employed as the Director of Economic Development for the City of
Piqua, Ohio. Prior to his employment in Piqua, Mr. Hollister held economic development
positions with the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana and the Greater Des Moines, Iowa Chamber of
Commerce.
Mr. Monastiere, in announcing the appointment, said “We are extremely fortunate to have
attracted someone with Fred’s credentials and extensive economic development experience. He
